SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. SCADA is a system that collects information or data from the field and then sends it to a central computer that will organize and control the data. SCADA systems are not only used in industrial processes, for example, steel mills, power plants and distribution (conventional and nuclear), chemical plants, but also in some experimental facilities such as nuclear fusion. From SCADA’s point of view, the size of the factory or process system ranges from 1,000s to 10,000 I / O (external / input), but currently the SCADA system can handle up to hundreds of thousands of I / O.

There are many parts to a SCADA system. A SCADA system typically has signal hardware to acquire and transmit I / O, controllers, networks, user interfaces in the form of HMI (Human Machine Interface), communication devices and some supporting software. All that into one system, the term SCADA refers to the whole central system. This central system usually monitors data from various sensors in the field or even from remote locations (remote locations).

Industrial monitoring and control systems typically consist of a central host or master (commonly referred to as a master station, master terminal unit or MTU), one or more field data collection and control units (commonly called remote station, terminal terminal unit or RTU). and a set of standard and customized software used to monitor and control the data elements in the field. Most SCADA systems have many characteristics of open-loop control and use a lot of long-distance communication, although some elements are closed-loop control and / or use short-distance communication.

Systems similar to the SCADA system can also be found in several processes, maintenance and other factories. This system is called DCS (Distributed Control Systems). DCS has functions similar to SCADA, but data collection and control units are typically located in a limited area. The communication can use local area network (LAN), reliable and high speed. You can read DCS information here.
